Session Description: Residential buildings annually use more than 20% of the nation’s energy. And yet, more can still be done to prepare REALTORS® to remain the trusted advisor to home buyers and sellers in the Green marketplace on the benefits and processes of retrofitting existing homes.
According to recent figures, REALTORS® sell between six and seven million existing homes annually and the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) has more than 1.3 million members. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the NAR have joined together and are currently working on a number of projects to address the missing REALTOR® link with regard to energy conservation in existing homes.
Many Real Estate Professionals are unfamiliar with energy audits, how they work, and how the auditor can help make your listings more competitive. What does this mean for an agent? How can you make your neighborhood Energy Auditor a partner in educating the homeowner about the value of becoming more energy efficient? How can sustainable leaders ensure the real estate transaction is as Green as possible? And even, how can real estate agents engage in more Energy Efficient business practices in their own offices?
The real estate industry is poised to play a far more active role in meeting the growing demand for energy efficiency features in existing homes. The time is now for Raters and Real Estate Professionals to join forces and transform energy wasteful existing housing stock to more comfortable, healthy, energy efficient homes that will contribute to our nation’s energy independence.
